memorial

Saturday afternoon we'll be going down to Louisville for the memorial service of my Uncle Bruce, who passed away a couple weeks ago. My brother will be coming down here Friday night, we'll spend most of the day on the road or at the service Saturday, and then Sunday is up in the air.

As for my uncle, I regret to say that I don't know a great deal about his personal life. Most of what I know is rather basic stuff, but also of his effect on my aunt. My Aunt Patti is one of my two godmothers, although my brother has always been closer to her than I have. There are two very good reasons for this: first, my brother is seven years older than me, and therefore the difference in age between the two of them is about 10 years (I'm not exactly sure). And secondly, when Matthew was growing up, Patti was a much happier person. I don't mean this in a callous way, she's had an awful lot in her life that made her much less happy. I don't really want to go into the details for why this is, nor do I even know the majority of those details. But what I can say is that Bruce was able to help her in ways that no one ever thought possible.

Bruce was an exceptionally kind and gentle man. I know he worked in the unions, he was very much a resource for people in both Cleveland and then Louisville. As much difficulty as I had when I worked a union job, I am aware of how much people like Bruce did to help us all. He was very giving, and always willing to help someone out. I know he had 3 children who are spread around the country (Vermont to California). Unfortunately, I know of only one vice that he had; Bruce had the unfortunate habit of smoking multiple packs of cigarettes daily. Ultimately, this vice killed him.

Bruce had been in a great deal of pain in the final few years of his life, as emphysema and cancer took a great toll on him. The final months of his life were remarkable for the tremendous swings in his state of health. I received multiple calls from my mother saying that the doctors thought he was near the end, and I received multiple calls from my mother saying that he's experienced a remarkable recovery. Unfortunately, it was in the midst of one of these periods of great health that the final countdown started, as he and Patti were out on a trip to the Grand Canyon when he could not continue.

When my Aunt Tave died last year, I attended her memorial service similarly lacking in knowing much about her. As far as I knew her, she was always this kind of shriveled older lady who always tried to help at family gatherings, even long after she was able to. At her memorial service, I learned that she was a fantastic woman, who experienced more things in life than I likely ever will.

I hope that Saturday I learn so much more about Bruce than I know now.

catching up

As I said, I went to Cleveland this weekend for my nephew's christening. Things are much better off for him - the doctor diagnosed him with acid reflux disease and prescribed a couple of medications to treat it. They're doing the trick, as he seemed very happy and was able to have a bottle without a problem. And he's a damn cute kid.

I had a very good finish last night in the Super Monday, taking 33rd. I got some good cards, but I ran pretty shitty in the tournament, losing with KK to QQ all in preflop in the 2nd hour that would have put me top 10, KK to AQ with 39 left or so when I was 3rd in the tournament in the chips that dropped me to average - that pot would have put me in the lead by a MILE and AJ to AQ on a JT9 flop. I did win two coinflips, one against a 2BB shorty and one of which was very key.

I also had a good result at poker room in the Ace of Aces tournament, although it didn't have any money involved. I finished in 14th when 10 paid. I was 3rd in the tournament with 19 left, but then people stopped folding, I made one bad call and TT ran into aces.

Tonight... We went back to standard. I couldn't make a hand in the super Tuesday, was down to 3500 chips on the last hand before break when I flopped a flush with 8s7s as the board came 6s3s2s. I bet and got 2 calls. The turn was an offsuit king. A player bet ahead of me, I pushed and he called with Ks8. Spade on the river, buhbye.

I entered the WPT Championship satellite on Full Tilt as well. One package for every 135 entrants, 166 entered so I had to win to get the seat. I got up to 4k nearing the end of the first hour when 68 < 28 on the 88A flop, then I lost a coinflip when 22 decided to die behind a raise, and could not hit a 15 outer, and out I went.

Back to normal. It really doesn't feel good.

Friday Afternoon

Nothing terribly fun results wise in terms of poker. I'm starting to run better, but I'm not playing as well. So the results haven't improved.

This weekend I'll be going to Cleveland, as it's my nephew's christening. Apparently he's been having trouble finding a suitable formula for him to eat, and he's been awfully irritable about it. So hopefully that gets fixed.

As for my tournament bracket, it's pretty ugly. I've got 3/4 of the elite 8 from the one side of the bracket - I had Mike Davis truly pissing off the entire state of Indiana and advancing this far before losing to Memphis. I correctly picked LSU to beat Duke, so yay there.

On the other side, I just have Villanova still with a shot to earn me Elite 8 points. In fact, the only other sweet 16 teams I correctly picked on that side were Florida and UConn. God, I hope UConn loses soon.

It's been a pretty boring week. Sorry for not updating, but this update was pretty damn boring, so imagine four other days of this and you see why I didn't bother.

Manic Monday

Two tourneys, the 150 on stars and the Super Monday.

Stars: QQ> AQ on like hand 4. CO limps, I raise from the BB with QQ, he reraises, I push, he instacalls with AQ (?). A on flop, case queen on river. I worked that to 4500 when KK < AA and that was that.

Super Monday: Got to 7200 early, down to 2300 at break when I made a play on a top ranked player. I had a very good feel for what he had, and I got a good river card for a bluff. He could only beat a bluff with that river card, and he did. Worked that back to 4k, back down to 2k when QQ flopped an ace and I had to drop, AJ > AK to get back to 4k, AA > JJ to get into five digits, and up to 15k. Back down to 12k, JJ > A4s to 25k. The big hand of the tournament then hit for me. With AsK UTG+1 I standard raised. The SB smallreraised which usually indicates a monster, and I decided to take a flop. The flop was QTx, all spades, and he pushed. I shrugged and called. He had KsK, so I was actually a favorite, but I could not hit any of my many, many outs. Down to 6k, I worked it back up to 12k. The last hand there I raised from the SB with AQo, the BB called and we checked down on the 45666 board, I showed the AQ and he mucked. The next hand, I raised with 88 on the button, the SB folded and the sizable stack on the BB pushed with A9s, I called and he flopped the ace and that was that.

It was nice to actaully come from behind, but I did it early when it was largely meaningless. The two big coinflips that I was involved in that could have put me in position to actually MONEY in the tournament - nope.

Bah.

got that out of the way

Loyal readers of my blog will remember the difficulty I had qualifying for the Poker Room Grand the last time it was held. This time around I had much less difficulty, as I made it on my 2nd attempt. I saw a qualifier on Poker Room going off where they guaranteed a seat, and only had 5 entrants with a minute to go, so I hopped in. Seven players went off, for a 2 player overlay. The play was even worse than I thought it would be, really genuinely terrible. It was the sort of "you need a hand" terrible, although I was able to read when the others were weak. Trouble is... the player being weak <> the player folding. It did allow me to make some thin value bets, however.

Down to 3 handed, one player had a 7500/1500/1500 advantage. That player finished 3rd. Heads up started with one player at a 8000/2000 advantage (numbers rounded, nobody took chips off the table). That player finished 2nd.

I actually got quite lucky, as he picked up QQ 2nd hand heads up. He played it about as badly as he could, though, minreraising preflop (I had 97), then making his "I don't have top pair" bet on the KJ7 flop. I called, and when he checked the 8 turn I tried to take it from him. He called, and I was going to give up until I spiked the 7 on the river. He couldn't fold on that street, either. We traded chips for a bit, then he minreraised my JTs raise (I was minraising from the button a lot - I wanted to build a reasonable pot to outplay him in, but not too big a pot. Plus, he was folding to the minraises often enough that it was enough of a raise to work). The flop was J98, a dream flop. He bet a big bet, his "I am trying to get you to fold because I'm saying I have a hand" bet, but I had none of it and moved in. He instacalled with AT, and no ace or chopcard came, and I had a big lead. I won with K3 against K9 on the K63 flop.

In other news today, I lasted under an hour in the $125gtd+$25k on UB tonight. No hands for that time, but I was able to work my stack up just a bit, then ran into AA with KK and busted. Standard.

I also played the 19k on full tilt, and that was the typical minefield. I ultimately went out of that one in a race, but both benefitted and was crushed by awful play during the course of the tournament.

I am now 3/4 in $50 heads up matches, unfortunately I went 1/2 in a 4 player heads up tournament, so I didn't win any money from it. I'll should probably play those an awful lot, since my edge against the random player is HUGE in them. I'd argue my edge against the random player is HUGE up to maybe the $200 level, but that might be giving myself too much credit.

Debbie and I attended the Blue Jackets game this evening. They faced off against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. I've said before, and I'll say again: Nationwide Arena is the best arena (defined as a venue with a roof overhead that is not a dome) I have ever been in. There are no bad seats in the house. We got seats on the red line in the 2nd to back row and had a wonderful view of the whole game. The Blue Jackets dominated the first period, taking a 2-1 lead and firing off 16 shots on goal. The rest of the game they mustered 12, and looked horrible, ultimately losing 4-3. Sergei Federov was out with back issues, and missing him was surely the difference in the game. The really frustrating thing about this team is you can see the amazing talent, it's there, they're just not putting it together.

As I was at the CBJ match, I had to listen to the Buckeyes on the radio. I did watch the final 2 minutes of the game on the in-Arena TV during the 2nd intermission. It sounded like they played poorly while Georgetown sounded to play really well. That's not a good combination in the NCAA tournament. It was a nice run, but this team sure could have used Greg Oden a year early.

perhaps perhaps perhaps.

So after going card dead in the Party 200k tonight (2 hours with one hand - QQ. I'd give the gory details behind how I busted but you won't want to hear them. To put it simply, it was a coinflip and a guy instacalled all in behind a raise, a call and a push with TT) I decided to play a heads up match on stars. I won. It took about 10 minutes, but I was able to read the guy like a book. I made one call that I was very upset with myself for, but I was able to put that aside and went on to win.

Heads up has always been a strength of mine. I've played a few heads up tournaments on stars, winning one (well, I chopped it because it was like 2AM and I had to get up in 5 hours) and making the rd of 32 in the other before running into a total card rack. Honestly, I feel that something has to go wrong for me to lose a heads up match, as opposed to things just not going my way.

So I'm thinking of mixing in a heads up match or two into my normal routine of pounding my head against the wall in MTTs.

Oh, and to make myself feel better, instead of a bad beat, here's a hand where I had every chance to go broke but made a very good fold:

grrrr

I haven't posted for a while for two reasons:

First, I haven't played a whole lot.

Secondly, whenever I have, it's been retarded.

I really hate peppering my blog with bad beat stories. I really do. Lately, that's all I seem to be doing, though. It's been no different since my 3rd place finish in the Ace of Clubs tournament. I was hoping that the finish signified a change in my fortune, but that's just not been the case. In consecutive tournaments I went out against slowplayed aces after getting it in 90% against them. Today in the FT 20 seat freeroll I went out with aces against a flush draw. In the Party million gtd today I took a few tough ones, including going out with 67 against AK on the Q97 flop.

Like I said, even when I finished 3rd recently, I didn't even get lucky. I'm STILL waiting for the tournament that I get those drawouts, because I haven't had that tournament in a long long time, and I've been due it for, like, ever now.

It's starting to come back

Last night I moneyed in the Super Monday on Party, although I lost $2.70 on the deal. I actually had my first real suckout in a long time, when I was shortstacked and in with 33 against QQ and fourflushed the river. I used that momentum and a couple of other key wins to get into the top 5 with 125 left (120 paid). I was bullying well, but my bullying cost me in a big pot. A minraise and two calls came to me on the BB with KQo. I decided to push to take the dead money. Unfortunately, the first caller had AK and called all in. He had the most chips of the 3, natch. Shortly into the money, my QQ ran into aces and that was that.

Today, after my 2 finals, I played a little on Bugsy's while making dinner. A 50/5 that only had 18 runners. Down to 11 (5 handed) I raised with QTd and the button called. The flop was JT4 with one diamond. I bet and he called. The turn was the 8d. I checked, because I really didn't want to risk getting blown off this hand. He checked behind. The river was an offsuit deuce, I checked again and called his bet. He had 22 - no diamonds. One outer.

Two hands later and at a full table (10 handed) I had K2c in the SB. One limper, I completed, the BB checked. The flop was 22T. Long story short, I lost half my stack to the limper's A2. Two hands after that, I lost all of my stack when my 55 lost to 77 on the T75 flop. That's a hell of a cooler.

I played the Super Tuesday and ran into some more bad luck. I had a player call on the end with an underpair to the board for almost all of his stack - it was good; then lost with an overpair effectively all in preflop. I built it back, lost a crippling race and then couldn't catch up to JJ with QT.

I also was in the PokerRoom Ace of Clubs tourney. This month, they bumped it to a 250/17 tourney with 20k gtd. Only 70 runners were in the tourney, which made for a nice $2500 overlay. I wasn't complaining. This structure is really superb, there's a lot of play in it, which I like. I really played some very good poker in this tournament. I was mostly puttering along, but won a really big pot to take the chip lead with about 15 left (10 paid) with QQ v. TT. I won a coinflip in that bubble area with 88 against KQ to solidify my advantage. Down to 11, I got it in with AK against the former chipleader's AQ. All was well till a queen spiked the river - I'd have been a very significant chipleader had that card not hit. As it was, I came to the final table in 2nd place.

I went a bit cold at the final table, but was making chips well enough to hold on. A key hand came when MP raised, the AQguy from before called, and I decided to take a flop with JhJ. The flop was 567, with two hearts. I checked to see what developed, but the others checked as well. The turn was the 4h. I led out and the PFR moved in for what was a significant portion of my stack. The caller folded, and I was left with a decision. I couldn't see this player having the flush - surely with the draw he'd have bet. The same went for an 8 or an overpair. That really only left one hand: Ahx. I decided in the end that I was very likely good (and, if I wasn't, I was almost certainly drawing very live). The player had the one hand I didn't even consider - A3. I was still drawing live to the flush or to a chop, but could not do it. That put me short with six players left, but I played some very effective poker to get back in it. I never was within sight of the chiplead again, but I lasted to 3rd, finally going out with AK to 56 when the chipleader priced himself into calling with his raise, and spiked a five.

It was good for $2600 though. It certainly felt damn good finally getting a result. The structure was slow enough that it allowed for a great deal of play, so my superior decision making and playmaking abilities shined through. And, it should go without saying, it was a hell of a confidence boost. My confidence has been awfully low lately, as I'm sure those loyal readers are aware. Hopefully this is the start of another swing up.

Summing up the past 2 weeks nicely

FT WPT satellite: All in with KK against JJ. J on flop.

Party 200k Gtd: All in with AQ for 12BB. I'm only against AA AND QQ. I think that's the definition of "drawing thin".

Thursday, March 09, 2006

full of rageahol.

Full Tilt WSOP satellite: I got rivered twice to get down to 500 chips, worked it back to 2200 and then out on a coinflip. Surprisingly enough.

Party Super Thursday: I got to 8k early, then got involved with QQ against AA and AA for a few chips before I got away, then was down to 5k, back to 10k, and then in the span of two hands I went out. I misplayed the first hand, then just went on "get me the fuck out of here" tilt where I called all in with AJ. I didn't draw out against AK.

That's the first time what's been happening the past few weeks has really gotten to me. It's been really rough lately and while I know I haven't been playing my best, I haven't had a moment like I just had now. I'm not too upset that I had it, what's done is done. Maybe it's a cathartic release, who knows.

All I know is I'm sick of losing.

Wednesday, March 08, 2006

if it wasn't for luck, I guess I'd win them all.

Well, not quite that haughty.

Out of the stars 150 tonight. I got a bit lucky early on when my AJ ultimately outdraw A3 who flopped two pair (of course, why he's raising with A3 there, who knows), but went out with 99 against KJc on the J9x, two club flop. The turn and river were both clubs, just for the added f you.

Also played in the UB 75k, which had a nice overlay due to all the problems they've been having lately. I got down to 1500 near the end of the first hour after bluffing into two pair. I lingered for a while before pushing on the button behind a hijack raise with JJ. The SB INSTACALLED all in for way too much, the hijack called due to the odds. I had JJ against 55 (hijack) and JTo (SB? WTF?). The flop was Q high, all spades, and JT had the only spade. The turn was an ace, the river was a king, and JT magnificently tripled up. I was left with 600 at 50/100. I was able to work that back up to 2500, but went out with AT against JJ. Button raised, I pushed AT from the big, he called. I didn't hit. Awfully frustrating. Getting old. Basically the same thing I've been writing for the past two weeks.

not a total loss

Couldn't do anything in the Super Tuesday. I went 45 hands without hitting a flop, then when I finally hit one I had TPTK against a set. I was too well invested to get away.

WPT Foxwoods satellite on FT tonight. I was doing well, then went dead and also went unable to manufacture chips. Down to 3 tables and half average I pushed for 11BB behind 2 limpers with 85s. AK had limped in EP, didn't fold, and I didn't draw out.

I decided to sign up for a $100 tourney on Party. I was unaware that it was limit, but it was. I actually made the money in this one, just barely. Limit's a game of catching cards, which I did a bit of. Unfortunately, I went cold at the final 3 tables, and you cannot manufacture chips in limit. The really tough hand came with the blinds high, I had 87s against 56o on a 567 flop. It's a virtual coinflip, and I bricked out. It was just a few hands later that I went out.

But at least I moneyed. And I proved that I AM able to catch some cards. I just need to do so more frequently, that's all.

come on

I know it sounds like I'm always whining, but again...

I'm not going to go into gory details, but it's getting ridiculous and it's beginning to affect my play. I'm making plays I shouldn't because I'm just so in need of taking a pot now, because I know if I let any more cards show on the table that it's going to punish me.

I've been in this spot before and i know it affected my play then. I have to just focus on playing the game that has gotten me into so many of these good spots.

Play perfect poker, play perfect poker, play perfect poker.

Sunday, March 05, 2006

heh

I giggle every time I see the O RLY owl. It's late, so this seems like a valuable thread in my blog.

Enjoy!

coinflips

I was motoring along with a very healthy stack at the 200k. Then:

I couldn't dodge an inside straight draw on the river.
I went 0-3 in coinflips.

This is getting really, really, really, really old. I'm sure it's getting old for you, dear reader, but this is really beginning to become ludicrous. I know I've said this for some time, but I'm due for a ridiculous run of good luck. Hopefully when that ridiculous run of good luck arrives it's in a big tournament with a big payday.

successful saturday

/sarcasm

Played 3 tourneys thus far. 300 on stars this afternoon which has a good structure. Busted within an hour getting no cards, and being forced to fold. I busted with TPTK in a spot in a WA/WB situation. Since I'd been forced to play so weakly due to not hitting anything, I thought there was a decent chance that the villain was putting a move on me. He wasn't, he had a set. This will come up again.

Full Tilt 30k gtd. I don't remember much about this tournament, except I didn't hit a damn thing and went out within about 40 minutes. I went out calling all in on a flush draw in a multiway pot when I was getting odds. I didn't hit.

Stars 100/9 deepstax. I got to 10k relatively early cracking aces (flopped flush), then to 12k with a set against a shorty who couldn't release top pair. I maintained that for about an hour, then within 25 minutes it went downhill, as I ran into sets on three occasions, including a hand that crippled me: AK v. 77 on the AK7 board. I'm not going to fold that.

Thus far, 3 tournaments and I've had a broadway pair once (queens) - and that flopped an ace. Let's hope the 200k this evening on Party will give me some better cards and some better luck.

i am so hot

Friday Special on Party. About 8 hands in, EP raises, called, I call the button with 44, SB repops it, and all of us call. Flop is 8T4, two diamonds. SB bets, EP moves in, I call, SB folds. EP did all this nonsense with J9 of diamonds, and it the flush. I win a coinflip to double up, I get donated another double up, and then lose a flip to go out.

55k on Stars. I don't know why I played, because my mind wasn't in it at all. I went a total of 0-3 in coinflips in the tournament, though I did win with AJ against AK during the rebuy period.

Back to standard, we are.

I woke up this morning to find out that the guy who busted me last night won, and a guy who open moved in for 100K at 2k/4k with guys who covered him in the blinds finished 2nd. (he had AK, a guy with 50k and AA called and two kings flopped). It's kinda sick to wake up in the morning and find out that the key was luckboxing it and not actually being good.

I was going to post a couple hands from last night this evening, but I am so friggin tired.

Friday, March 03, 2006

real quick

finished 10th in the Party Super Thursday for 1700 bucks.

Went cold and bad lucked at the same time. Lost 3 of my last 4 coinflips, AA to KQ (he made quad queens, I made aces full. Seriously.) AQ to A8, and then went out with QQ to AQ. I did not come from worse than a coinflip down except for early in hour 2 when I played a hand using my as-if strategy. I wasn't ahead, but the river was kind.

I was due for a nice run at a Party tournament, I said not too long ago that I cracked the code here, and I was due for a result. I won a few coinflips early, had the hand I mentioned in passing early, and got some cards. Unfortunately, that nice run couldn't hold through to the end of the tournament as I ran into a few luckboxes (one of the guys still aroudn moved in for 100k FTA at 2000/4000 with AK and cracked aces.)

1700 isn't 37000, but it's nice enough for now.

just an ugly day

Played a lot of smaller buyin tournaments this evening.

I forgot. In these smaller buyin tournaments, people are even LESS inclined to let go of a hand. Wow, some bizarre stuff got called down. Despite this, i kept running into monsters all day long.

I also tried satelliting into next Monday's WSOP Satellite via SnG. I was down to 230 in the first level when a player decided that A7o was good for all 1300 of the chips he had left, and made a fourflush. I got a bunch back when I pushed with Q7s that got called by KJ and made a boat. I got aces against AQ, then lost a whole bunch with queens to ace five (A on flop). I grinded it back and had the chiplead down to 3 when I lost a flip (against a guy who'd already gone 3-3 in the SnG) and then pushed AJ into aces (against the coinflip guy, who slowrolled).

Lots of monsters were against me today, but that's fine. It happens sometimes.
