an actual poker hand!

It's been a while since I've posted any actual poker content, i'll just post one here.

This was from a 2 table HU SnG. 4 players, winner take all.

Table 1 was against a total overaggro donkey who I had just lost a straight heads up match to when I bluff-pushed 74 on a JT96 board - he had 8T. During the course of the first match, I kept getting 72, 73, 84, 82, 62 - that crap. Meanwhile he got KK 3 times, QQ and TT during the course of the match - and that's just what I saw. I was slowplaying hands most of this match, not doing too much without a hand (but I did win a few hands with nothing, it was all about the timing)

So I move to this one, this guy seems pretty normal. Of course, it's a total change from the previous guy who I could count on to bet bet bet my hand for me. That's what really makes this play quality.

odds and ends

Sunday I went into work. I went to the area I dropped my buddy off on Friday, and on a wire overhead there was a medium sized black bird chirping away quite vociferously. I assume it's because it thought I was a predator and was sending a warning out. I'm naively going to believe it was my buddy. He recognized me and gave me a shoutout. Thanks man!

On Saturday I made the error of thinking to myself "Man, I haven't run that badly the past couple of days." On Sunday I regretted this realization.

I was given the finger today. I was headed to class here, and was turning left at an intersection on campus. The light had just turned red, so I began to turn when I realized that the jeep that was barrelling down Lane (the street) had no intentions of stopping, so I quickly jerked my wheel to the right to get out of its way. As he continued to go through the intersection he slowed down long enough to stick his middle finger out of the window. I hate people.

That incident aside, I love being down on campus in the summer. There are so many fewer people here, it's great. It really gives me a cold jolt the first week of fall classes, though. So...many...people... go...away. I shudder thinking about it.

hi!

I'm back.

Did you miss me?

Sorry I've been away for so long, I've been quite busy. The World Cup has been fascinating, even if the Americans weren't. There's been other things going on, I've been playing less poker and I've still been running bad. So rather than using valuable blog space to post bad beats I just haven't been posting much.

Anyway, here's an interesting story from work today. As you may or may not know, I work at Fedex Ground just south of the city here. I move trailers around the yard, using a vehicle that looks similar to the one posted here. Anyway, as I was backing into a dock door, I noticed a bird no more than a foot and a half from where I drove by, and the bird didn't move. I thought this was interesting, so I backed to the dock, and came and checked the thing out. It sat there and stared at me. As I put my hand to him, he opened his mouth. I figured it was a chick of a rather large breed of bird that had not been able to fly, and was stuck there as a result. I picked him up, but he wasn't happy about it and wormed out of my grasp. I called my coworker over to check the bird out. My coworker was working on some potato chips, so I told him to give me one (he intially refused on the grounds that birds don't like potato chips), and I fed the bird some. Apparently, birds really don't like barbecue potato chips, but he was hungry enough to have a few bites. I got a better grip on him and relocated him to a grassy area on the edge of our yard.

During the course of the day he slowly made his way towards the fence, and at the end of the day I couldn't find him - I assume he made his away on the other side. Hopefully my buddy will be able to make it. Obviously it's unlikely, but now that he's gotten out of the yard, I can assume he did.

Oh, and yes, I am a total softie.

24 hours away

Unfortunately, I'll have to record the first couple of games on Friday as I'll be at work. Bah.

I'm still geeked!

Observations from today

1) Radio advertisement heard on the radio for a skydiving place:

"Have you been looking for a reason to jump out of a plane?" Uh, no. Not really.

2) Ryan Freel being interviewed on the radio:

Though I got in the car after the question was asked, by Freel's response I'm ld to believe it's about how you can make a catch when slamming into a wall (as he did to save the game a couple nights ago). Included in his answer was "If I'm gonna run this friggin far, I'm gonna catch the ball, I don't care what I have to do." Nice.

3) I agree with Joe Morgan?!?!?! WTF?

Joe Morgan says that Lastings Milledge's celebration with fans was acceptable. I agree! I think it was cool that he was happy that he hit a big homer to tie a game (his first career home run) and gave high fives to fans on his way to his position the next inning. That's cool! That's not showing up your opposition. Standing at the plate and watching - that's showing up.

Baseball has some unwritten rules that are asinine.

Party Million and an explanation

The explanation:

It was eight days from, and is now five days from: the World Cup. It begins Friday. Rock on.

I finished something like 780th in the Party Million Gtd today. It was the first week of their guarantee, and God was the tournament awesome. In the first two levels people were going broke with one pair left and right. I found myself in situations where I could have lost a significant number of chips early, but really lost just the minimum on most all of them. I got up to 9k shortly before the end of the first hour as I won a game of chicken, then QQ won a nice pot (the only big pair all tournament), but gave a bit back when I wasn't able to hit at the end of the hour and went to the first break with 7500 in chips (start with 5000)

Hour two started rockily. I had to switch computers briefly as the laptop's connection was on the fritz, so I don't have those hand histories as I write this out. I know I dropped down to 4000 chips at 150/300 after AK and AQ completely whiffed and I got runner runnered in a battle of the blinds. I flopped a non-nut straight on a two spade flop and pushed behind a bet and a call to get a good chunk back and found spots to get to 9k again as my first table broke.

For whatever reason, I amped up my aggression at the new table. I'm looking over the hand histories, and I don't see any real reason for it other than it worked. I got to 13k when KQ > KJ, then to 18k in a battle of the blinds when I intended to put a play on my opponent, made a hand and extracted the maximum from it, and headed to the 2nd break with that count.

The next hour I really ramped up my aggression. I took a nice pot with eights, then pushed a shorty in with AT on a Q high flop (he folded) before I made what I believe was my lone error of the tournament. I raised in MP with KQo, and the small blind pushed. Without taking a whole lot of time to do math or anything, I called. I was against AKo and folded. It was a silly mistake that cost me 6000 in chips. Had I taken the time to do the math I would have realized that I was only getting about 1.8-1. It was close, but a fold was correct. I did not get bailed out by the deck.

In the space of two hands I went from 19k to 25k to 18k, but I got back to 23k with some more aggressive play in a button/blind battle. I built that to 36k when I raised preflop with KQ and got called by the BB. On the KJx flop, he potbet, and I called. The turn was a blank and he bet the same amount and I called again. The river was a brick that went check/check - he had AJ.

I blinded down for a bit - I folded AQo behind two pushes getting only about 1.8-1 that would have made two pair against J9 and KK. It was the right fold, but damn did I want that pot. I doubled up the same guy from the AK/KQ hand when I raised with JTo and he pushed again. This time I took my time, was getting about 2.2-1, which I felt was good enough to call with JT. Unfortunately, I was again chasing 3 outs as he had TT, and could not catch up. That dropped me to 22k, then I was forced to fold AK on a jack high flop, which put me down to 14k.

I doubled up a few hands later when AK held over KJ. I very nearly got very, very mad when the flop came JJx, but runner runner clubs to my Ac gave me the hand. We were all in preflop, and that would have been nasty. From there I slowly worked my way back up to 33k when the wheels fell off. In the span of 10 minutes of play I took 3 beats to take me from 33k to out. I'll leave how it happened to the imagination, but I'll say it thusly: I'll lose all three of those hands one half of one percent of the time. The bustout was particularly brutal as 99 lost to A6 to the ace on the river.

While it SUCKS that I took 3 beats in a row to bust, I'm very happy that I played well. I am upset at myself for my one mistake and I am unfortunately aware that I would have still been in the tournament had I not made that mistake. However, this continues my trend of not getting bailed out by the deck when I fuck up. It also continues my trend of running godawful. I played 3 hours, got one big pair and still managed to outlast 80% of the field. That's pretty damn good.

I'll say it again: eventually it will pass. Please. SOON.

this is getting retarded

Ok, I hate doing this but...

I've had 8 overpairs lose this week, all in preflop.

I've bubbled in SnGs three times today on coinflips, and bubbled with dominating hands another two times. I busted out of the 40k on party today with AK against AQ and K9 (who called two all ins? With K9s?) when the river was a 9. This... is getting fucking retarded. Seriously.

eight days!

Just Eight Days away!

I hope to win something really major this weekend so that I can afford some free time to watch all month. That would rule.

Of course, I'm running miserably. It's just been nasty. We'll stop there.

EIGHT DAYS!
